About Commissioner Felleman

Fred Felleman was the first Seattle Port Commissioner elected on an environmental and clean energy platform. He continues his environmental leadership while serving his third four-year term in office.

For the past 40 years, Fred has been a conservation leader in the Pacific Northwest specializing in the protection of the marine environment and all those dependent on it. As a marine mammal biologist and maritime consultant, he has worked with business, labor, and community organizations to develop policies that balance environmental protection, economic prosperity, and social equity at all levels of government, including those of sovereign tribal nations.

Fred founded the Energy and Sustainability Committee upon arriving at the Port Commission in 2016. His efforts to reduce Port-related greenhouse gas emissions began with the first cruise ship call in 1999. His efforts to champion the reduction of the Port’s carbon footprint have resulted in the expansion of shore power use by ships, installation of the first solar arrays, increased energy efficiency of Port buildings, and the advancement of the use of renewable maritime and aviation fuels. He is also committed to supporting sustainable tourism practices that create memorable visitor experiences while minimizing the environmental and community impacts on the places being visited.

Central to all of this work is a drive to ensure the Port’s aviation and maritime operations remain dynamic contributors to the region’s economy by creating living-wage jobs while elevating public awareness of its efforts to be a good neighbor, in order to preserve the social license necessary to function within a vibrant city.

Fred lives in Ballard with his wife, Amy, and spends time in the San Juan Islands, which enables him to remain connected to the briny source of his motivation for public service.
