Status: In progress
This project relocated Checkpoint 1 from its former location on the Ticketing level to the lower Baggage Claim level. This created new spacious queuing, travel document verifications, and added additional security screening lanes.
Project Overview
The original Checkpoint 1 is located at the south end of the Ticketing level and is now Checkpoint 2. It was undersized and only serving TSA PreCheck and CLEAR passengers. By relocating this checkpoint, space is better utilized to provide more compliant screening lanes, TSA support spaces, adequate queuing to meet peak demand, and flexibility to accommodate current and evolving screening protocols. It added five more lanes for higher throughput in passenger screening.
The relocated Checkpoint 1 took the place of the Baggage Claim Carousel 1. The carousel was removed and replaced with this brand-new security checkpoint. Due to the new positioning on the Baggage Claim level, it serves all passengers but is a main benefit for those traveling internationally with quick access to the S Concourse by taking the escalator down to the SEA Underground, or the escalator up for quick access to the A Gates. It's also a benefit for passengers dropped off on the arrivals curb during peak departure periods, which helps alleviate curb congestion. All passengers checking bags will still have to check them up on the Ticketing level.
SEA is also keeping the original Checkpoint 1 open on the Ticketing level. Security checkpoint numbers were renumbered on April 17, 2025, to accommodate for the new Checkpoint 1 that will open on the Baggage Claim level, as well as the now Checkpoint 2 (formerly Checkpoint 1) that will continue to serve TSA PreCheck and CLEAR passengers.
This is one of many projects in a series designed to modernize the front door of the main terminal with upgrades on all levels. SEA has seen a growing number of travelers and is making adjustments accordingly in order to create a more efficient and predictable guest experience, from curb to gate.
