Port of Seattle Commission Directs Process to Begin to Designate North SeaTac Park for Permanent Recreational Use

Order follows successful advocacy in 2024 FAA Reauthorization Act
October 8, 2024

The Port of Seattle Commission today passed an order establishing the goal of permanently designating North SeaTac Park (NSTP) for recreational use. This action was made possible due to the Port’s work with U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell, U.S. Representative Adam Smith, and the rest of the Washington congressional delegation to include language amending the 2024 Federal Aviation Administration Reauthorization Act.

The next steps include staff working to document that NSTP meets the criteria to be eligible for permanent protection, as laid out in the legislation.

“I'm honored to sponsor this order, and we reached this milestone through strong partnerships with our local communities, jurisdictions, and congressional delegation. Near-airport communities deserve parks and open spaces, and today brings us closer to permanently preserving this one for future generations,” said Port of Seattle Commission President Hamdi Mohamed. “Last year, we traveled to Washington, D.C., met with the FAA, and pushed for this legislation. We are deeply grateful to our congressional delegation who brought it over the finish line.”

“Today’s action affirms the Port Commission’s commitment to South King County communities by establishing the goal of permanently protecting North SeaTac Park for future generations,” said Port of Seattle Commissioner Fred Felleman. “North SeaTac Park is one of the most significant green spaces available to airport communities. The park helps provide cool, clean air and recreational opportunities essential to their health and quality of life.”

The Port Commission will continue to hold conversations about the future of North SeaTac Park as part of its ongoing discussions with Port leadership, the City of SeaTac, and community stakeholders.
