Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) is thrilled to celebrate the return of its former longest-serving international airline partner, Scandinavian Airlines (SAS), today with the inaugural flight to Copenhagen, Denmark. For decades, SAS served SEA and the Pacific Northwest, starting in the 1960s. The start of a new route to Copenhagen with five flights a week brings back many memories for locals in the region who remember their first trips to Europe on SAS aircraft.
Port of Seattle Commissioner Ryan Calkins and SEA Airport Interim Managing Director Arif Ghouse attended today’s celebration.
“We’re very excited to welcome SAS back to SEA and offer a new route to kick off a summer of travel to everyone in our region,” said Commissioner Calkins. “Not only do we have a historical relationship with the airline, but our rich Scandinavian cultural connections run deep, and this is an exciting nonstop connection to Denmark’s beautiful capital city which shares so much in common with the Greater Seattle region.”

“Seattle is more than just a new destination for us. It is a return to a city with historic ties to Scandinavia and growing importance for business and tourism,” said SAS Group CEO Anko van der Werff. “We are proud to reopen this connection and offer our customers even greater reach across the Atlantic.”
SAS will fly Airbus A350s to the Scandinavian destination. This is now the third Nordic capital city directly accessible from SEA. Additionally, SAS joined the SkyTeam Airline Alliance last year, allowing for easier connections on Delta Air Lines flights.
Stay curious in Copenhagen
Known for architecture, theater, and an innovative restaurant scene, there’s a lot to see and do in Copenhagen, especially on two wheels as the most bike-friendly city in the world. With one of oldest monarchies in the world dating back to the Viking era, you can witness the changing of the Royal Danish Guard every day at noon or visit several noteworthy castles. Take a day trip out to a beach town or go hunting for more of Thomas Dambo’s giant wooden troll installations, similar to those you find here in Ballard, Issaquah, or on Vashon Island.
