Opening Day Kicks Off the 2025 Seattle Boating Season

April 17, 2025

Seattle is a city defined by water and the Pacific Northwest’s natural beauty is a massive part of its identity. And when boating season officially begins, you can bet the whole town will be there to celebrate.

One of the most anticipated events of the year is the Opening Day of Boating in Seattle, a colorful and lively tradition that kicks off the summer boating season. Every year, this festive occasion is filled with vibrant parades, unique boat displays, and a sense of community that unites all of our region’s water enthusiasts.

The parade of boats

The centerpiece of Opening Day is Seattle Yacht Club’s Annual Opening Day Boat Parade, which will take place on Saturday, May 3. Boats of all shapes and sizes gather on Lake Union and the surrounding waters, each one decorated with elaborate themes, streamers, and flags. Participating boats will decorate to this year’s theme Back to the 80’s! As the boats cruise through Lake Union and the Montlake Cut, spectators line the shores, packing parks and piers with picnickers and families. It's the perfect way to enjoy the sun (or the occasional spring rain) while taking in the beauty of the Pacific Northwest.

Beyond the parade: activities for everyone

Opening Day isn’t just about the parade — there are plenty of activities to keep people entertained all weekend long.

  • The Windermere Cup: On Saturday, May 3 attend one of the world’s premiere rowing events. This rowing regatta will welcome nearly 750 athletes, showcasing the talent of local, national, and international crews in an exhilarating day of competition.  Fans can catch the action from the north and south shores of the Montlake Cut or from boats anchored along the log boom in Lake Washington

  • Boating and waterfront events: Many local companies offer opportunities for rentals, lessons, and tours. Whether you’re interested in paddleboarding, kayaking, or taking a guided boat tour of the lake, there’s no shortage of ways to get out on the water

  • Food and drink: Kick off the weekend on May 2 at the Party on the Cut to enjoy boats, bites, brews, and bands. The surrounding neighborhoods feature a wide range of food trucks, local vendors, and restaurants

For Seattle, Opening Day of Boating is more than just an event — it’s a showcase of the city’s maritime history. From the iconic seaplanes and ferries to recreational vessels, Seattle’s relationship with its waterways is integral to its lifestyle. Whether you're sailing, paddling, or enjoying the view from land, this day reminds us that no matter how busy life gets, there’s always time to pause, enjoy the moment, and reconnect with our maritime heritage.

Happy boating, Seattle!
